The oysters of Jean-Pierre
Our Story
A producer of oysters in Kerboxeur, St. Helena, since 1920, the JULE family has been in oyster farming for more than a century, making it one of the oldest family of ostracists, still in operation, on the Ria d'Etel.
Joseph Marie, the founder, born in 1896 was a fisherman's sailor and ostrian farmer, married Léonie in 1927, an ostrian farmer with him, and died of tuberculosis in 1939, at the age of 43. Three children, including Yvonne l ́ainenée (1928) and Fernand (1933), then Yannick (1937) found themselves orphans. The children, growing up, will help their mother, who in turn died at the age of 41 in 1948. Yvonne married for 1 year will ensure the continuity of the exploitation with her husband and Fernand who officially started at 14 years old (1946) the work of oysters. Fernand, the eldest of the boys, will resume exploitation and marry Lucia in 1957, who will also be an ostrian farmer with her. Two children, Catherine and Jean-Pierre are born of this union, Lucia still lives in Kerboxeur, near the yard and her children and grandsons, in the renovated house of the founding grandfather. Fernand and Lucia worked until their retirement at the end of 1992 where Jean-Pierre will take over until today. Thus, the whole JULE family has always lived in Kerboxeur.
Anecdote: The name of the site's Dit Place refers to the founding grandfather... who was a boxer at those lost hours and thus gave the name of Kerboxeur to the place where he lived! (where the boxer lives in Breton).
Jean-Pierre returned to work in 1992 after a few months in duplicate with his parents.
Still working on the original site, oysters are raised in different parks in the Ria d'Etel, from the Fandouillec island to the Manéhellec tip, to the arm of Landevant, representing 12 hectares and an annual production of about 60 tons sold to private individuals, restaurants and catering wholesalers.
